Biography
Maurits Wouters is a filmmaker and visual artist. In 2009 he graduated from RITCS – School of Arts as a film director. He went on to complete his education at the University of Antwerp with a Master’s in Film and Theatre Studies (2011). From 2013, he has been working on a PhD in the Arts, with the support of the FWO (Fund for Scientific Research), which he obtained in September 2017.
Artistic Profile
In his work Maurits Wouters investigates the visualization of collective, often fading memory. Maurits collects audiovisual (often analogue) data from different sources and transforms them into new artworks. Trained as a classical filmmaker, he evolved quickly to experimental film and expanded cinema. He was looking for a way to embed his filmmaking practice in the tradition of painting and visual arts. To this end, he develops a personal visual language, with techniques derived from painting and other art disciplines. He also examines new forms of projection canvases to incorporate the materiality of the projection screen into the viewing experience.
Film Screenings & Exhibitions
His work has been screened at international festivals: FIDMarseille (FR), Jihlava FF (CZ), Visions du Reel – Filmmarket (CH), OFFoff Cinema (BE), Bozar (BE). Experimental Intermedia and Fridman Gallery, important New York venues for avant-garde cinema, have shown his films. His work is included in the archives of Argos Arts (BE) and Anthology Film Archive (New York).
