Maurits Wouters has always been fascinated by the art of painting, and by texture in particular. A new image is created, through the act of applying paint strokes on a white surface, layer after layer. Dust and dirt, over time, become part of this process. When we look beyond the image, the painted surface is an object in its own right.
Maurits uses a large painting as projection screen, covered with various layers of silver paint, dust, dirt, old photographs. As a result, the projection screen becomes part of the viewing experience. Onto the silver layers of paint, shades of projected light impose an new layer of time. Moving Images reminds us of the early days of cinema, the silver screen, the aesthetics of silent movies.
